In the midst of an exciting season, with a busy trade deadline, and something people like to call a playoff berth; in between the talks of when Kyle Okposo will return, or Whether JT will win the Hart, the Art Ross, or both, I see very little comments on what I believe to be a glaring hole within the organization.
Uhh, the Isles kind of need a back-up goaltender.
With a contract set to end this coming Summer, Michal Neuvirth finds himself in a situation similar to that of Thomas Vanek and his time spent with the Islanders.
In a Constanza-esque “it’s not you it’s me” bit, seeing Neuvirth choose to extend his contract with the Islanders is much easier said than done. As his journey to find a proper home [read: Starting role] makes its newest, and possibly shortest, stop in New York.
His career .912 Save% is Top 20 among active goalies and has put up some of the league’s best numbers this year playing behind the notoriously strong defense in Buffalo …. okay well at least the “league’s best numbers” part was true.
After being a part of a tandem in both Washington and Buffalo, all while putting up numbers any one would love to see their starter put up, it is fair to say #30 has earned, and most likely has his mind set on, a team’s starting role.
This, of course, is something the Islanders cannot provide for the 26 year old. With Jaro Halak lak-ed down [I hate myself] until 2018, and him kinda-sorta being one of the catalysts for this team’s newfound success, there is no question who this team’s #1 is.
As a rental, Neuvy will most definitely make a strong contribution to this team’s playoff run barring a complete meltdown, but looking long-term it is unlikely we see him donning blue and orange when he skate at the Barclays Center.
Can’t wait to hear from all you guys when I’m wrong!
