Islanders Player Twitter Power Rankings

Islestwitter

Twitter launched 9 years ago today. No Twitter, No #IslesTwitter.  Could you imagine such a world? Maybe Arthur Staple could.

In honor of Twitter’s birthday, IslesBlog offers you the New York Islanders Twitter Power Rankings:

1. John Tavares (@91Tavares) – 115.2K Followers, 134 Following

The Islanders Captain doesn’t take to Twitter often and when he does it is either about his @Oshawa_Generals or for a charitable cause he is supporting.

2. Michael Grabner (@grabs40) – 101.3K Followers 182 Following

Surprised that Grabs is topping 100k? You shouldn’t be. The dude works social media with 6,760 total tweets (and being injured so often last season gave him ample time to perfect his craft). Grabner shares his life on Twitter, including the recent birth of his child. He will respond to fans, RT mentions and endorse products.

3. Nick Leddy – (ledpipe08) – 97.5K Followers 299 Following

Leddy’s ranking is the likely byproduct of having two fan bases following him. Undoubtedly, there are some carry over Blackhawks fans included in his follower total. He’s not a tremendous source of original content, but he has become a frequent RTer of tweets that catch his eye.

4. Kyle Okposo (@bookerT2116) – 48.3K Followers 129 Following

KO has been dormant on Twitter since May but will address fans and the team when feeling inspired. Okposo thanked the fans after his mystery injury on January 26th and again for making the Barn special following the regular season finale. His profile has a link to AthletesOriginals.com, where you can buy Kyle Okposo Tee Shirts.

5. Ryan Strome (@strome18) – 44K Followers 119 Following

With 1,082 tweets, Stromer is one of the more active Islanders on social media. He will update his avatar and cover photo with regularity and loves tweeting photos of his athletically superior hockey family. Most recently, he RTed his brother Dylan being drafted and signing with the Las Vegas, I mean, Arizona Coyotes.

6. Matt Martin (@matttymarts17) – 36.6K Followers 277 Following

Have to be honest, little surprised that Matty Martin isn’t higher on this list. Martin has 1,317 tweets, has been a loyal and lifelong Islander, is active in the community and dates Boomer Esiason’s daughter.

7. Casey Cizikas (@zeeker11) – 19K Followers 234 Following

Big drop off from #6 to $7. Zeeker doesn’t tweet much. The frustrating part is the most simple of tweets get so much action. While injured, he received 96 RTs for a simple “JT baby!!” after a Tavares 2nd period goal in St. Louis.

8. Brock Nelson (@BNelson) – 14.4K Followers 310 Following

Props to Brock locking up the @BNelson handle. Bill Nelson and Brian Nelson were sleeping at the wheel. Brock’s timeline is pretty random from memes, to promotional tweets to RTing Adam Schefter after a Johnny Manziel TD last season.

9, Anders Lee (@leeberr09) – 13.7K Followers 445 Following

Lee follows the most accounts on the team. Anders was the recipient a sweet new contract and new followers following his tweet acknowledging that he had signed a new 4 year deal with the team. Anders is also apparently a Game of Thrones fan based on his “Winter is coming” tweet on May 31st. That got 304 Favs by the way. Athletes got it good.

10. Thomas Hickey (@thomas_hickey14) – 10.8K Followers 283 Following

Don’t call him a depth defenseman! The diminutive Hickey is second on the blue line in followers. He’s verified now, but just in case you weren’t sure it was him, his handle is made up of his first and last name along with his sweater number.

11. Calvin de Haan (@cal_dehaan)  – 10K Followers 253 Following

de Haan’s is getting more active on Twitter and is not beyond responding to fans directly which is always nice. You need that kind of support if your coach is going to scratch you for Brian Strait. His tweet following the final regular season game on Long Island received 900 FAVs, although I didn’t quite get the #onelove hashtag

12. Johnny Boychuk  (@joboych) – 8,219 Followers 70 Following

#55 defers to his brothers Dave and Sam to handle the family business on Twitter. Boychuk is the only Islanders player not verified as he has only been a user since March 12th. It will be hard to top his first tweet as he announced that he resigned with the Islanders for 7 more years. Only three tweets have followed, the latest with a reference to “crazy pills.”

IN THE SYSTEM

Michael Dal Colle (@MDalColle71) – 9,371 Followers 112 Following

The 19 year Canadian apparently is a baseball fan as well. His last two tweets include a picture from Citi Field and a reference to Albert Pujols during Monday’s Home Run Derby.

Josh Ho-Sang (@66jhosang) – 9,046 Followers 99 Following

For a player known for the gift of gab, Ho-Sang is a little shy when it comes to social media. That may be a good thing for Joshua and the Islanders in the future. There are far too many examples of athletes not thinking before they hit send. Fantastic cover art featuring a NWA drawing. Fight the power!

Ryan Pulock (@rpulock) – 6,888 Followers 767 Following

My favorite Bio description: “New York Islanders prospect.” Pulock clearly has loved being an Islanders prospect (although that will end soon enough) and loved welcoming new prospects as they were drafted this June

Mathew Barzal (@Barzal_97) – 5,421 Followers 209 Following

Verified at 18 years old. Not too shabby. What I love most about this account is his cover photo, a panoramic picture from what likely is his senior prom.

Anthony Beauvillier (@titobeauv21)  – 2,995 Followers 144 Following

Also verified. We will look past his most recent RT celebrating the career of Martin St. Louis. Beauvillier will mix in some French in his tweets if you are looking for an alternative to Rosetta Stone
