The year is 2013, the Islanders find themselves in the NHL post-season for the first time in 7 years. Their opponent? The hated Pittsburgh Penguins. Fast forward six games and it is the Penguins celebrating their series clinching OT goal to advance into the Stanley Cup Quarterfinals.
Bad memories, right?
What if I told you that the Islanders had found themselves in a similar situation. Their opponents are the same, the highly talented Pittsburgh Penguins, but this time, instead of Crosby and Malkin, the Islanders are lining up in front of the great Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. The only other difference, the Islanders prevail at home in Game 6, and then went on to take Game 7 and advance into the playoffs.
The year is 1993, and I'm 2 years old, the Isles find themselves down 3-4 heading into the final minutes of the second period.
That is until Steve Thomas found Brian Mullen in the slot.
Mullen places it home, tie. game.
In a game that saw names like Kasperitus, and Ray Ferraro find twine, it was the man credited with the gamechanging assist to Mullen, Steve Thomas, who would go on to score the game winning goal. Final Score, Islanders 7, Penguins 5... see you in Pittsburgh.
The Islanders would go on to win Game 7 by the score of 4-3, in turn, taking the series and advancing...
Ah, the memories.
